NIT Goa, IIT Mumbai ink MOU to ‘further cooperation’ on education, research, development

PANAJI: The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Goa, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, which will enable students from Goa to carry out research, as part of their academics, at the IIT Bombay laboratories. As a part of this cooperation, IIT Bombay is also expected to initiate new degree programmes at NIT Goa.

NIT Goa director G R C Reddy and IIT Bombay director Devang Khakhar signed the MoU at the IIT Bombay campus last week. NIT officials said that the MoU was ‘for the purpose of furthering cooperation in educational, research and development activities.’

The NIT Goa, which is operating from a temporary campus at Farmagudi, is expected to benefit from this MoU in terms of laboratory and other facilities being made available at the IIT-B to its students. The state government has, since 2010, been dilly dallying in allotting land to the NIT to develop its permanent infrastructure. Officials at NIT Goa said that its students and faculty members will be able to participate in training, certificate programmes and other higher level degree programmes at IIT-B as part of the new understanding.

“This cooperation will boost the technical education and research programmes at NIT Goa. It is a pioneering initiative on the part of NIT Goa as this joint venture will benefit the students of the institute and help them develop in a better manner. Both the institutes have decided that the B Tech, M Tech and Ph D students of NIT Goa would get the opportunity to continue with their research at the lab of IIT-M as part of the MoU. This will be immensely beneficial for our students,” NIT Goa spokesperson Sarani Ghoshal said.
