Govt scheme to ‘reward’ higher education teachers

HeaderImage74The government has announced a scheme for ‘Rewarding Meritorious Teachers in the Institutions of Higher Education in Goa.’
Every year, two most meritorious college/ university teachers shall be bestowed with the state awards, under the scheme. The awards will consist of Rs 25,000 in cash and a citation. The selected teachers would also be entitled for extension of 1 year in service.
The awardees shall be felicitated on the Teachers’ Day, every year. However, for the academic year 2015-16, the awardees shall be felicitated on the Goa Liberation Day, 2015.
The new scheme is basically designed with the intention of recognising selfless and meritorious services rendered by teachers of general degree colleges, and that of Goa University.
The other objectives of the scheme include encouraging awardees to serve higher education sector with a renewed vigour and enthusiasm, and setting an example of ‘Role Model’ teachers before the younger generation of teachers in the educational field.
There are around 1,500 teachers in the various general degree colleges of Goa including those in Goa University, who are providing their services for enriching higher education sector in Goa.
A similar scheme already exists for school teachers, with the selected school teachers being honored with state awards, annually.
Under this existing scheme, 8 teachers including principals of higher secondary schools and headmasters of schools are felicitated every year on the Teachers Day. “The particular scheme is operated by directorate of education, however all these years, the teachers working in professional degree colleges and in Goa University, were not considered under the scheme as the same was not made applicable to them,” informed the director of higher education Bhaskar Nayak, adding that the scheme for ‘Rewarding Meritorious Teachers in the institutions of Higher Education in Goa’ is designed in order to provide an opportunity to the eligible college/ university teachers to become state awardees.
The department of higher education informed that only those teachers and principals who are in service shall be eligible to apply for the state award, under the new scheme.
“Such teachers and principals need to possess essential qualifications as required under UGC norms at the time of their appointment,” the department informed, adding that the applicant should be full-time regular faculty in Goa University/ affiliated colleges, who are confirmed in service.
The applicant should also be an outstanding teacher having significant academic contribution. Furthermore, he/ she should have been instrumental in uplifting his/ her own institution. Irrespective of the number of years of service, the permanent, full-time regular teachers should have a very good API (Academic Performance Indicator) score to contest for these awards.
The teachers to be recommended for the award should meet eligibility criteria stipulated for the award, as also their academic efficiency and image as a teacher among students and community around, should be given due weightage.
The government will constitute a selection committee every year headed by an academician of repute, for selecting the winners of the award. There will be two other members nominated by the government. The director for higher education will be a member/ member secretary on the committee.
