St Xavier’s College: Developing human values
All India Association for Christian Higher Education (AIACHE), New Delhi, and St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, jointly organised a one-day workshop titled ‘Human Values Development Programme (HVDP)’.
The workshop was attended by representatives from various academic and professional colleges in Goa. In his address, principal, Fr Walter de Sa stressed on the importance of human values. He said that values in society are of special importance today and indeed more important than mere academic and educational qualifications. He declared the formal launching of the Peace Club, under the guidance of Zen Lobo and Sr Sabina from Shantiniketan, Saligao. Fr De Sa stated the Peace Club is actively involved in imparting character education during value education classes.
General secretary, AIACHE, Daniel Ezhilarasu spoke on the importance of character. He said each one should maintain a diary to note down at least one good deed we do each day and share the experience with others. Psychiatrist, Shanti Davidar conducted the first session where in she highlighted the role of the body, soul and spirit in society and in individuals in particular. The second session was delivered by chaplain and associate professor, department of Philosophy, Madras Christian College, V M Spurgeon. Spurgeon expressed delight in St Xavier’s College’s vision ‘Formation for Transformation’. He said formation is not enough and transformation is also required for every individual in society. Hence, intelligence should go hand in hand with values to make this possible. Spurgeon then divided participants into groups to initiate discussion, group interactions on different values and effective techniques of delivering the same in a classroom. In the evening session skits, story telling, hymns, videos, etc, were organised by each group. The purpose of these methods was to make value education sessions interesting and interactive.
